Five Bristol schools compete in cross-Trust athletics event
Everyone was a winner at the first inter-school athletics event for Venturers Trust, held in May. Seventy Year 5 pupils from five schools took part in the day of sporting activity, hosted by Merchants’ Academy in Withywood and organised by Head of Sport at Venturers’ Academy, Ben Tier.
Pupils from The Dolphin School, Bannerman Road Community Academy, The Kingfisher School, Merchants’ Academy and Venturers’ Academy were supported by staff, alongside ten Junior Sports Leaders from Merchants’ Academy and Venturers’ Academy.
The Junior Sports Leaders who are all in Year 10, are responsible for helping to motivate other students to participate in sport, a position that helps to boost their confidence and encourages role model behaviour.
The morning began with a series of sporting challenges in the spacious sports hall, before moving outdoors for races on the school’s running track, all in glorious sunshine.
Ben Tier said: “This was a fantastic event that brought together children from all over Bristol to compete on behalf of their school. The pupils really enjoyed the friendly competition and cheered their teammates on with huge enthusiasm. Fostering a sense of community and team spirit is especially important as we find ways to help young people to recover from the impact of the pandemic. I’m hopeful that this will be the first of many more cross-Trust events.”
